LAST MEETING
Oct. 27 - A Canal That Would Have Changed the Look of Chattanooga – Gordon Phillips

In 1955 when plans for the Interstate highways were being developed, engineers were considering building a canal on the Tennessee River that would have had a profound impact on road and river traffic and on the general landscape of Chattanooga. The proposal called for the construction of a waterway that would cut across the top end of Moccasin Bend, essentially short-circuiting some five miles of river traffic and allowing I-24 a clear path from the southern end of downtown to Tiftonia. N ot only would barge travel be reduced by five miles each way, but Chattanooga would have enjoyed a three-to-four foot lower flood level.

Our own Gordon Phillips told us about the history of those times and provided us with the details of how the canal would have been built, just how it would have changed the way Chattanooga looks today and the objections that ultimately led to the rejection of the plan.
