NEXT MEETING___________________________

Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 - Noon - Chattanooga Convention Center -

TVA's Role in Developing Modern Mapping Techniques - Alan Voss, formerly with the Tennessee Valley Authority, will speak about TVA's early mapping projects.  In the early 1930's when TVA was established by Congress to control floods, improve navigation and promote the general regional development of the Tennessee Valley, few maps existed.  Alan will discuss why good maps were urgently needed to accomplish the mission and how TVA met this challenge.  In just over two years, the entire 40,000 square mile TVA watershed was mapped using photogrammetric methods.  He will describe the pioneering efforts of TVA and its partners in the development of photogrammetry and how it laid the foundation for maps of today.

Until his retirement in 2006, Alan had been employed by TVA Geographic Information and Engineering (formerly Maps and Survey Branch).  There he served as Supervisor of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, managed the Valley Mapping Program, the Tennessee Statewide Parcel mapping Pilot Project, mapping services to support the US military, and served as TVA’s representative to the Federal Geographic Data Committee which coordinates all federal mapping work.  Alan has BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of WisconsinMadison.
