"Turning carbohydrate-rich waste into Ethanol" - As energy becomes more expensive, many manufacturing firms are looking within their facilities to determine how to produce energy from their own waste streams. The McKee Foods Company in Collegedale, TN is one of many companies investigating this potential. Terry Howell, Manager of Research and New Technology at McKee Foods will discuss the efforts McKee is making to identify the waste streams that could be used to supplement their energy requirements and the technology that would be required to do so.

Larry Martin, an engineer with McKee Foods, will join Terry to provide a brief history of the company. He will also describe McKee’s on-going "eco-efficiency" efforts and their plans for the future.

PREVIOUS MEETING_______________________

 

Feb. 23 – Fred Lupton III, Manager of Human Factors Group at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, spoke about Toyota's history in the U.S. beginning with a plant built in California in 1957 to assemble the Pet Crown Vehicle.  Lupton discussed the fuel crisis in the 1970's, which had a positive effect on sales of the Celica and Corona.  In 1973, the Styling Studio opened in Los Angeles.  Later, the studio moved to Ann Arbor, MI.  In 1984, Toyota formed a joint venture with General Motors to build the Corola and Tocoma.  In 1986, Toyota opened a plant in Canada to build the Lexus.

 

Toyota believes in local (U.S.) design and development of vehicles for the U.S. market.  The Toyota Technical Center, Ann Arbor, MI, is responsible for vehicle development:  styling with clay modeling, design engineering, human factors, driver vision, control and display layout, and driver assistance systems.  Fred briefly described Toyota's work on advanced battery technology.
