NEXT MEETING___________________________

Monday, Mar. 16, 2009 - Noon - Chattanooga Convention Center

“Seasoned cast iron: How it’s done, and the problems that have been resolved” - Prior to seasoning in the plant, customers would have to season their cast iron at home which would take hours and leave their home smelling like smoke.  At home, the initial seasoning would require washing to remove whatever coating covered the pan from the factory that inhibited rusting.  Then customers would have to coat cast iron cookware completely with oil and heat it until every pore was filled with oil.  This was not a good practice for customers to have responsibility of the initial seasoning of their cast iron, because they often did not do it correctly.  The first problem the manufacturer needed to overcome was how to mass produce in minutes a process that typically took 2-3 hours at home.  Other problems included application issues, curing problems, and Environmental and Safety concerns.

Keith Nunley, Engineering Manager at Lodge Mfg. will discuss how Lodge overcame these problems with some innovative ideas.  He will include the story of the Tennessee Pollution Prevention Partnership, which explains what is done with the seasoning oil that has been in contact with the floor.

Monday, Mar. 16, 2009 - Following Keith Nunley’s presentation.  ASCE president, Rob Witcher, will introduce ASCE officers and mention their future meetings or other ASCE news items.

Note: Although reservations are not required, if you plan to attend this meeting, please let us know your plans by replying to this email.  This will help give the caterer a more accurate count for lunch.

PREVIOUS MEETING_______________________

Daniel Edwards, Lead Engineer for Astec Inc.'s Green System product line presented the Warm Mix Asphalt System. Astec's answer to Green asphalt plant design, which saves energy, reduces mix temperature 50 degrees Fahrenheit, improves equipment performance, reduces VOC emissions, and reduces oil vapors normally emitted from the hot asphalt.  Astec's newly developed mixing system injects water into the asphalt cement, creating tiny steam bubbles that lower the viscosity of the asphalt mix.  130 Green Systems have been installed by Astec.
