Ken Garner Mfg. is a supplier of counterweights for cranes and other construction equipment. To date, the heaviest counterweight manufactured by Ken Garner Mfg. weighs 35,000 pounds. This company has formulations to produce densities in excess of 66% of the density of solid iron.

Ken Garner Manufacturing began producing filled counterweights for a single customer in 1987.  Since then the company has brought on 10 additional customers of counterweights for hydraulic excavators and mobile cranes.

Join the Chattanooga Engineer’s Club (CEC) for a one hour tour of Ken Garner Manufacturing to discover how this company became the leading producer of filled counterweights in North AmericaJohn Garner, Project Engineer at Ken Garner Manufacturing, will be our tour guide.  Mr. Garner has completed several contract jobs for the company in previous years including some work on weld positioner design, custom software design, and a business software implementation.

PREVIOUS MEETING_______________________

Steve Smith and Steve Rasor described a concept called PET or “Personal Environmental Transportation”.  The concept leverages the longstanding American love affair for cars as a personal space, along with a newer trend toward environmentally friendly transportation technologies.  They envision a system which allows one to have a customized ‘personal environment’, perhaps an electric vehicle capable of travel on its own for short distances.  This vehicle would hook into a very fast public system for long distance travel.  Both the public and personal systems would use power from the electric grid.  Energy storage technologies would be integrated into the transportation system, which could also serve as the backbone of a new electric grid.

The PET concept provides an alternative to conventional public mass transit, which many reject as being too impersonal and Spartan, and meets the goals of mass transit, such as reduced congestion and reduced environmental impact.

Mr. Smith and Mr. Rasor hope that an open-source or Wikipedia-style model of technology development can be advanced locally and that Chattanooga can be the hub for this development activity.
