Monday, June 22, 2009 - Noon - DOUBLETREE HOTEL, Second Floor (407 Chestnut St., Chattanooga, TN 37402)

"Chattanooga Wastewater Treatment Strategy" - Jerry Stewart, WWTP

The Moccasin Bend Waste Water Treatment Plant currently serves more than 220,000 residents and 102 industrial dischargers in the Chattanooga and surrounding area.  Jerry Stewart, Director of the Waste Resources Division, Department of Public Works in the City of Chattanooga, will describe this facility and its evolution since its beginning.  In particular, Mr. Stewart will describe how the wastewater treatment system is evolving in response to population growth and more stringent environmental regulations.   The modernization task is difficult because some of Chattanooga’s sewer systems are over 100 years old, and Chattanooga did not begin to use modern wastewater treatment until 1960.  Mr. Stewart will also describe the progress his department has made in adapting new technologies and methods to treat the wastewater of Chattanooga

PREVIOUS MEETING_______________________

Tim McGhee, Department Head of Engineering Technology at Chattanooga State Technical Community College (CSTCC), discussed the 57% growth in the number of students enrolled in engineering and technology related programs of study in 2008.  He explained how Volkswagen and the nuclear renaissance are impacting our current and future workforce needs and how Chattanooga State in partnership with local and regional industry is planning to meet those needs. He discussed how scholarships sponsored by local engineering, construction, and manufacturing organizations (or individuals) have greatly helped aspiring engineering and engineering technician students meet their career and academic goals.

Mr. McGhee mentioned the new Technical Academy at the Middle College High School, which allows a high school student to enroll in the School during the sophomore year in high school and pursue an engineering technology program of study.

The academic community has focused on several industries:  automotive manufacturing industry, energy industry, including renewable energy technologies, non-destructive testing, radiation protection, metallurgy, nuclear technologies, and Industrial maintenance technology.  New classes planned by CSTCC include concentrations in Radiation Protection, Non-destructive Testing, Industrial Maintenance Technology, and Electromechanical.

Mr. McGhee briefed the Club on a new National Power and Energy Center, which is a collaboration between local government, higher education, manufacturing, and the energy industries, respectively.  Mr. McGhee defined the Center’s vision for Chattanooga and the Technology Corridor as one to establish the region as a center of excellence for the energy industry. For more information regarding the National Power & Energy Center or Engineering Technology programs at CSTCC, please contact Tim McGhee at tim.mcghee@chattanoogastate.edu.
