PREVIOUS MEETING_______________________

Jerry Stewart, Director of the Waste Resources Division, Department of Public Works in the City of Chattanooga, spoke about the operation of the Moccasin Bend Waste Water Treatment Plant and Interceptor Sewer System.

Some of the old sewers in Chattanooga are brick and were installed in the 1890’s.  The modern Interceptor Sewer System was started in 1952. Pump stations and regulator chambers were added,.at first, followed by the wastewater treatment plant. Over 50% of the current sewer system was constructed of brick, clay, and concrete before 1970.

In 1960, the Moccasin Bend Primary Treatment Plant was completed. The Plant currently serves more than 220,000 residents and 85 permitted industrial dischargers in the Chattanooga and surrounding area.  It has treatment capacity of 140 mgd and a peak capacity of 220 mgd.  The Plant uses chlorine to disinfect the liquid in order to prepare it for discharge to the river.  Samples of the discharge to the river are checked 4 times per month.  Methane gas from the anaerobic digestion process is utilized to provide energy for the Plant and reduce natural gas consumption.

Mr. Stewart said it may cost several hundred million dollars to modernize the sanitary sewer system to meet federal requirements to mitigate sanitary sewer overflows.
