Monday, July 13, 2009 - Noon - DOUBLETREE HOTEL, Second Floor (
“The Process
of Flour Milling” -
Flour has always played an important role in the history of
western civilization and other cultures around the world. Today, it is present
in almost every food we eat, from bread, to cake, to pizza, to pasta, and so
much more. We could not imagine life without it; yet, most of us have given
little thought of how flour is produced, other than at a picturesque gristmill powered
by a water wheel.
Chad Bontrager, Assistant Facility Manager and Head Miller
at Horizon Milling Chattanooga, will describe how flour is processed today. He
will provide an overview of the grains that are used in the production of flour,
as well as the equipment used to grind these raw materials. Mr. Bontrager will
also discuss the machinery used in the grinding operation, the power
requirements, the distribution of products, and the general operation of a
modern flour mill.
Horizon Milling is a leading flour producer, offering wheat
and flour products for a wide range of product applications.
