Monday, November 2 - Noon – DOUBLETREE HOTEL, Second Floor, Inspiration Room (407 Chestnut Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402)

"Rethinking the universe: The New Paradigms of Dark Matter and Dark Energy" – Dr. Robert Marlowe

Over the last few decades space-based observatories have given us a vastly greater perspective of the cosmos, providing us with eyes that can see far beyond the electromagnet spectrum that is possible from earth. Even the “eyes” of earth-based observatories have become much larger and more sensitive. Our view and understanding of the universe has thus become much greater and has revealed some astounding phenomena. Dr. Robert Marlowe will describe some exiting discoveries that have been made over recent years and how these discoveries have changed our thinking of the cosmos and our knowledge of science. Among the most interesting discoveries is the stuff we see in space.  The stars, gas and dust account for 4 percent of the universe’s mass, whereas 23 percent is a mysterious “dark matter” that surrounds every galaxy. The remaining 73 percent is “dark energy”, a form of energy that permeates all of space, and used to explain recent observations that the universe appears to be expanding at an accelerating rate.

Dr. Robert Marlowe is a Professor of astronomy at UTC, who has taught there since 1987.  With the background of experimental physics, he is currently involved with the use of laser light scattering to investigate the diffusion of large biomolecules.

PREVIOUS MEETING_______________________

Dr. Jim Henry, UTC Professor of Chemical Engineering, reviewed his trip to the State Engineering University of Armenia.  Oleg Gasparyan met Dr. Henry on the internet and invited Dr. Henry to visit Armenia under the Nato Science for Peace and Security Program.  Dr. Henry showed illustrations of remote experimentation projects in several fields, including HVAC, motor-generator control.  He compared the characteristics of Armenia and Tennessee

Armenia became independent from the USSR in 1992, and many jobs evaporated.  The enrollment in the University program diminished from 25,000 to 10,000.

Web based engineering student laboratories supplement direct hands-on laboratory work.  Funding for the tests is arranged in advance.  The requesting student initiates the actual test and reviews progress through cameras and microphones in the test lab.  A person in UTC laboratory may click on a website, click on a certain function, initiate test, etc.

The National Science Foundation now expects each US lab to support itself, if possible.

Scheduling laboratory experiments is not difficult.  Microsoft has funded remote lab experiments at MIT.

Armenians from outside the country send more money to Armenia than Armenia generates within the country.
