PREVIOUS MEETING_______________________
Dr. Robert Marlowe, a professor of
physics at UTC, began his presentation with Thomas Kuhn's observation that
scientific revolutions are non-cumulative events in which an older paradigm is
replaced in whole or in part by an incompatible new one.
In 1922 the Russian mathematician Aleksandr Friedmann
solved Einstein's general relativity field equations for the case of an
isotropic, homogeneous universe. Einstein added an additional term, known
as the "cosmological constant," to Friedmann's solution, so that
Einstein's prediction of a dynamic universe would remain a static non-changing
universe.
(H² = 8ðGp) R² = -kc²

The ð tells us the overall geometry, but
not necessarily the ultimate fate of the universe. Good ole’ ordinary
matter (protons and neutrons) makes up only 4-5% of what we need for a flat
universe.
Non-baryonic Dark matter is revealed
only by its gravitational influence on baryonic matter. Dark Energy’s
main feature is that it acts as negative pressure, opposing the gravitational
attraction experienced by normal matter. Its effects are only noticeable
over cosmological distances.
Dr. Marlowe taught his last astrophysics
class in 2008.
