“Energy Policy and the Smart Grid” - Rob Manning, TVA

 

Rob Manning will discuss how national energy policy is affecting TVA’s power system now, and how it may affect it in the near future. 

 

Manning joined TVA as Executive VP Power System Operations in August of 2008, after a 30 year career at Duke Energy.

Speaker:  Dr. Larry Carey, Earth System Science Center, University of Alabama in Huntsville

Speaker:  Dr. H. Lee Dodds, Professor of Nuclear Engineering, UT Knoxville.  Dr. Dodds presented a brief history of the development of nuclear power in the U.S. and abroad.  He showed that Nuclear power generation has increased in recent years through better operations and power up-rates.  He summarized of recent developments in nuclear power nationally and internationally, including government, industry, education, and U.S. public opinion. His presentation also included brief comments about global climate change, renewable energy, and energy diversity. 

 

In response to audience questions, he summarized strategies for spent-fuel handling in view of the recent decision to not open the Yucca Mountain facility, and discussed options for fuel recycle or reprocessing.

The Chattanooga Engineer's Club meets at the DOUBLETREE HOTEL, CHATTANOOGA, Inspiration Room (407 Chestnut St., Chattanooga, TN 37402). Free parking is available in the gated parking lot on the south side of the Hotel. The gate will be open from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Plan to arrive at about 11:30 a.m., if you intend to park in the limited space available. No additional parking is available in the pit east of the Hotel on Chestnut Street.
