Thursday, February 18 — 6 pm to 8 pm — Engineers Week Awards Banquet
DOUBLETREE HOTEL, 407 Chestnut Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402
"Role of Engineering in
Developing Astec Industries Family of Companies"
Keynote Speaker: Dr. J. Don Brock, Astec Industries
CEO/Chairman/Founder/President
J. Don Brock and four other men
started Astec Industries in 1972. They had worked together previously and they
wanted Astec to design, manufacture and sell specialized asphalt production
equipment. There were seven major manufacturers of asphalt plants in the
United States when they started, so competition was pretty stiff. They
vowed to never copy a competitor's equipment or hire local competitors'
employees. In just five months, the team sold four complete plants and
took in nearly 50 orders all demanding a new design. They worked long hours
because of their commitment to succeed and they produced attractive equipment
with advanced features, efficiency, automation and durability.
A highlight of the evening will be
presentation of these awards:
The
Engineer of the Decade
The JO CONN GUILD Outstanding Engineer of the Year Award
The GEN. ROBERT NEYLAND Young Engineer of the Year Award
The CARLISLE A. JORDAN Technician of the Year Award, and
The PHILIP J. SUTTON PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE Award
RSVP by Friday, February 12, to
Lulu Copeland, 423-697-3212.
Cost: $40 per person or $300 per table for eight.

MEETING____________________________
Monday, February 15 — Engineers-Week Kick-Off
Luncheon — “Too Much is Never Enough” by
Mr. Ralph Jakobs, Head of Research and Development, Volkswagen Group of
America, Chattanooga Operations. Mr. Jakobs’ theme was the intense,
passionate attention to detail that characterizes VW’s approach to
designing, engineering, testing and producing cars. He walked us through
many steps of the development process, and described how the VW team works
together to help shape localized vehicles, using both global and local
resources.
He entertained us all with video clips from advertisements
used in Germany that show young boys playing with cars, to emphasize the fun of
driving. Other clips illustrated VW’s approach to engineering
safety. He also teased the audience with possible styling concepts for
their New Midsize Sedan.
As the head of research and development at the Volkswagen plant
under construction, Mr. Jakobs is working towards introduction of the New
Midsize Sedan. The plant is scheduled to begin producing cars in early
2011 for sale that fall as a 2012 model.
