"Weather Radar for
Improved Rainfall Estimates in the Tennessee Valley"
Dr. Lawrence D. Carey, Principal Research Scientist in the Earth System
Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Accurate estimates of rainfall are necessary for weather
forecasting, agricultural planning, water and river management and many other
activities essential to our quality of life. Today, the rain gauge is the
professional standard for accurately measuring point rainfall in hydrology and
meteorology. However, maintaining a large network of rain gauges is very
expensive. An emerging alternative approach is to use weather
radar. In his presentation, Dr Carey will discuss the use of weather
radar for routine rainfall estimation, including the basic theory, the
challenges and the benefits. A special emphasis will be the ongoing
collaborative R&D project between the TVA, The Von Braun Center for Science
& Innovation, Inc., NASA, and the University of Alabama in
Huntsville. This collaboration is developing radar-based rainfall
estimates over the Tennessee River Valley for daily management of the Tennessee
River System.
