“Testing a 30 kW Capstone Microturbine” Benjamin Fryar and Jared Meyer -
University of Tennessee, Chattanooga

Benjamin Fryar and Jared Meyer, recent graduates of UTC, will describe this turbine and their experience in testing its performance as part of their senior engineering project.

The C30 Capstone Turbine is a compact, low emission generator that provides up to 30 kW of electric power at about 25% efficiency.  The system includes a compressor, combustor, turbine, generator and recuperator.  Rotating components are mounted on a single shaft that rotates at up to 96,000 rpm, supported by air bearings.  An inverter is used to convert the generator output to 50 or 60 Hz AC.

PREVIOUS MEETING____________________________

Monday May 3 David Dinse, discussed TVA’s near Zero Energy Homes program.   Three experimental homes in the Campbell Creek area of Knoxville have been modified and are being monitored to evaluate residential building technologies, energy efficiency technologies, smart grid concepts and consumer energy-use behaviors in a realistic environment.  One home represents a typical house currently built in the Tennessee Valley (Builder Home).  The second home is also a typical house, but has been retrofitted to improve efficiency (Retrofit Home).  The third house has been built using the latest in construction technologies to make it as efficient as possible and still provide excellent curb appeal.  This home employs photovoltaic panels and solar water heating to help make it a near zero-energy house (nZEH).

Congratulations to Mark Wojnovich, for election as Secretary by unanimous vote.
