“Enerfit - an Energy Saving Retrofit for Commercial Air Conditioning”

Ron Patch, founder of Electronic Controls, Inc.

Enerfit is a patent-pending methodology and control strategy for retrofitting existing single zone, commercial air conditioning units to save energy, reduce relative humidity, control indoor air quality, and extend the life of the unit.  The Enerfit solution is designed and manufactured in Chattanooga and is being tested locally prior to full commercialization.  Field tests are yielding total unit energy savings ranging from 40 percent to 70 percent. Ron Patch will describe more details about his invention and explain how he is able to achieve such high energy savings.

PREVIOUS MEETING____________________________

Monday May 3 Jared Meyer and Lynn Calloway, recent graduates of UTC, described their experience in repairing and testing a Capstone C30 microturbine.  The Capstone turbine was donated to UTC by CARTA.  It had previously been used in a hybrid electric bus.  The C30 is a compact, low emission generator that provides up to 30 kW of electric power at about 25% efficiency.  The system includes a compressor, combustor, turbine, generator and recuperator.  Rotating components are mounted on a single shaft that rotates at up to 96,000 rpm, supported by air bearings.  An inverter is used to convert the generator output to 50 or 60 Hz AC.

They also described work to install a Volkswagen TDI engine with a dynamometer and data acquisition equipment at the UTC Center for Energy Transportation and Environment.
