MEETING ____________________
Monday
June 21 – Larry
Cole – TVA
“Planning
for the Tennessee Valley’s Environmental and Energy Future.”
Larry
Cole will discuss TVA’s long term planning process, which begins with
forecasting power demand over the next 20 years, and then considers options for
supplying this power, in a cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally
acceptable manner. In addition to traditional power plants, the plan will
also consider alternatives such as renewable generation and energy efficiency
programs.
TVA
expects to release a draft Integrated Resource Plan for public comment
this fall. After considering comments received, a completed plan is will
be prepared for consideration by the TVA Board of Directors in the spring of
2011.
Larry
Cole earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia
Tech in 1982. Immediately after graduation, he joined TVA as a field
engineer. Later, he became involved in real-time dispatch and hourly scheduling
of generation and transmission assets. Last year he was given a
rotational assignment to the Integrated Resource Plan Project Team as Project
Manager.

MEETING____________________
Monday
June 14 – Tim
McGhee, – Dean of the Engineering Technology Division, Chattanooga
State Community College
“Preparing
Tomorrow’s Energy Workforce, Today”
Tim
McGhee discussed new energy-related programs that have been developed at
Chattanooga State to supply skilled technicians for the growing energy and power
industries. Three of these programs build on prior success in developing an
INPO - certified Radiation Protection curriculum in cooperation with TVA.
(INPO, the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, was created to share lessons
learned across the nuclear power industry.) These programs are
Non-Destructive Testing, Quality Assurance/Quality Control, and Nuclear Power
Engineering Technology. All are being developed with input from industry,
and offer graduates a direct path to the workforce. In the Radiation
Protection program, 12 of 13 recent graduates went directly to work after
graduation.
Tim
also discussed programs that integrate new technologies such as solar power and
smart grid technologies into existing curricula.
