A quote from an MTSU website:"...we set the first world land speed record in '91 at the Salt Flats.  We upped it for the next two years after that. ...  And our last race was two years ago.  Our soybean car was 4th out of 40, only beat by NASA with two entries and American Honda.  We were winning that thing, but the soybean oil deteriorated or dissolved one of our rubber lines.  And we didn't know that stuff would do that.  So the students were still able to fix the line, get the car back in service, and still finish fourth in that event.  Otherwise, I think we would have won it."
