Chattanooga Area E Week 2009 Activities
February 15-21, 2009

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international program for children ages 9-14. It combines a hands-on, interactive robotics program and a research presentation with a sports-like atmosphere. Teams consist of up to 10 members and focus on such things as team building, problem solving, creativity, and analytical thinking. This year's theme (2008) will focus on weather and climate change. For information about the 2008 challenge and the First Lego League, visit the FLL web site at www.firstlegoleague.org.

This year, the Chattanooga Engineers Club is working with teams from:

* Brainerd Baptist School
* 21st Century Academy
* Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences
* David Brainerd Christian School
* A Lookout Valley home-school team
* Tyner Middle Academy
* An East Brainerd home-school team
* A Soddy-Daisy home-school team
* 2 Signal Mountain home-school teams
* A St. Elmo after-school, neighborhood team

Each team will create and maintain a web site as a part of the research and presentation portion of the challenge. Click on the links above to follow their progress.

This year, the traditional "Chattanooga Local Event" will be held at the studio of WRCB, Channel 3. The teams will get a chance to practice competition without scoring or awards, meet and work with the climate "experts" from Channel 3, and meet the other teams from the area. In the past, this has resulted in an unusually effective research and presentation by local teams.

On December 6, 2008, the teams will compete in Cookeville, Tennessee, for the state competition.

For information on starting a local team in the Chattanooga area, contact Cathy Burnett or Ed Chapin. For information on starting teams anywhere else in Tennessee, visit the Tennessee First Lego League’.

Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. Teams of 15 students work on their teamwork and problem solving throughout the year in preparation for each of the events. There are multiple events in earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computers and technology that follow the format of popular board games, TV shows, and athletic games. Events in the Science Olympiad have been designed to recognize the wide variety of skills that students possess. While some events require knowledge of scientific facts and concepts, others rely on science processes, skills or applications.

If you answer yes to two or more of the questions below, then we invite you to become part of the renaissance in science education by starting a Science Olympiad team in your school, district or state. We would like to share the excitement and successes that have been experienced at Science Olympiad Tournaments all across the country.

Do you teach or work with students in one of the grades K-12?
Are you concerned about declining achievement in science classes?
Would you like to see student interest in science increase?
Do you wish we could capture the kind of interest, enthusiasm, and commitment for science that we see exhibited for sports?
Would you like to participate in a program that is aligned with the National Science Standards and the TIMSS Recommendations?
Are you ready to increase student scores and student interest in science and improve community perception of science education?
